Comparison between American Airlines EXP and United 1K

Based on a recent Flyertalk thread, where a number of United 1K members are ready to defect to American, I thought this might be a good opportunity to do a side-by-side comparison.  This comparison focuses on just the upgrades and other perks associated with each program.  It does not take into account of flight availability, routing, or on-board products.  That’ll be another blog for another day.

  1. Overall, why would someone go to AA for anything other than luggage tags?

  2. These comparisons are sort of "in a vacuum" - they are official benefits. Being 1K and EXP, I can tell you that my international upgrades clear in advance more often on AA. My domestic upgrades clear more often on AA.

BMVaughn - do you really not see the value of eVIPs/SWUs on any international fare? Even O (bulk fares)? Have you not found yourself looking at $$$ extra for W to play the day-of-flight SWU-upgrade roulette?
